Navigating the Job Market: Insights from Caleigh Heck's Journey as a Student
As a student with a strong interest in photography, design, and marketing, I frequently contemplate how to establish my unique direction in these artistic areas. Recently, hearing from George Brown alumna Caleigh Heck gave me some much-needed insight into the reality of job hunting and career growth. Caleigh’s journey from being a fresh graduate to landing a fulfilling role at D2L was not only eye-opening but also filled with lessons that I can apply to my own search for a co-op.
The Surprising Power of Networking
One of the biggest takeaways from Caleigh’s talk was the immense value of networking. I’ve always heard about the importance of making connections, but Caleigh’s story really drove this home. Like her, I’ll soon be graduating and will likely face the challenge of job applications asking for more experience than I have. What surprised me was how much her connections helped her land roles, even when she didn’t have direct work experience. She maintained professional relationships from her time in school, particularly through LinkedIn, which opened doors at D2L.
As someone with an interest in creative fields like design and content creation, I realized that networking doesn’t always have to be formal. It can happen naturally in class projects, group work, or even through Instagram or LinkedIn. I’ve started to think more seriously about maintaining connections with my peers and instructors because these relationships could be the key to unlocking opportunities in the creative industry. My next step will be using LinkedIn more proactively, connecting with other creatives, and reaching out to potential mentors in content creation and marketing.
Standing Out as the 'Purple Cow'
Caleigh mentioned the concept of being the "Purple Cow" a standout in a sea of applicants. This idea stuck with me because, in creative industries, originality is everything. Whether it’s content creation or marketing, standing out with a unique voice or style is crucial. For me, this means embracing my passion for design and photography in ways that show employers who I am beyond the standard résumé.
Moving forward, I am considering developing a digital portfolio to display my design projects, personal photography, and social media campaigns. This is my method to differentiate myself, to demonstrate to potential employers my abilities and my creative thought process. Caleigh's reminder was that having the right qualifications is important, but it's also essential to demonstrate your unique qualities and passion for the job.
Job-Search Strategy: Applying Caleigh’s Tips

Caleigh shared many useful tips for job searching, but one that really stood out to me was the importance of being flexible and open to different roles. As a student still discovering all the areas of marketing and design that I enjoy, this was one of the "aha" moment for me. I’ve been hyper-focused on specific roles related to content creation and photography, but Caleigh’s journey made me realize that it’s okay to explore. She moved through various roles at D2L—from co-op to global digital marketing specialist—learning and growing in ways she didn’t initially plan for.

This resonates with me as I search for a co-op position. I now understand that being open to roles that might not seem like the "perfect" fit at first could still lead to incredible opportunities and growth. Whether it's working in design, digital marketing, or content creation, I’m ready to approach my job search with more flexibility, knowing that each experience will teach me something valuable.
My "Aha" Moment: The Value of Continuous Learning

For me, the real "aha" moment came when Caleigh talked about the importance of continuous learning. As a creative, I’ve always been curious, but I didn’t fully grasp how much additional skills like taking online courses can set you apart in a competitive job market. She emphasized how platforms like LinkedIn Learning and Meta Blueprint helped her stay ahead, especially when trying to stand out for positions she didn’t initially have experience in.

This hit home for me because, as I think about my future in content creation and photography, I realize that my skill set can always evolve. Caleigh inspired me to start focusing on building more technical skills that complement my creative abilities. For instance, I have already begun researching Adobe Creative Cloud certifications, which will enhance my design skills and increase my attractiveness to employers. I intend to enroll in additional design and marketing classes in order to stay current with industry trends and enhance my portfolio further.
Reflecting on My Career Path

Caleigh's experience taught me that career trajectories are not always direct. Watching her evolve through different positions serves as a reminder that it's acceptable to not have all the answers. As I look for a co-op position, I see my future differently now - not just as a dream job, but as a collection of opportunities to improve my photography, design, content creation and marketing skills. Her emphasis on building connections, being unique, and constantly expanding my knowledge has changed my approach to my professional life.

Conclusion

Caleigh Heck’s journey has offered me invaluable insights into what it takes to succeed in today’s job market. As a student with a passion for design, content creation and photography, I feel more confident about navigating my co-op search and future career. Whether it’s networking, standing out as a creative, or continuously learning, I now have a clearer idea of how to make myself marketable and seize opportunities as they come.
